Pros

Great reputation. Active student acquisition and marketing. Good facilities. Teachers are among the best in the GTA. As good/steady a salary as most music teachers could hope for in the private sector in the GTA. Generally good people all around.

Cons

Administration is struggling with a leadership transition. Roles of the different co-owners aren't clearly defined, and so positive change and teacher-led initiatives have a hard time coming to fruition. There's a hard divide between the owners/upper management, and teachers and non-senior operating staff. The divide creates a strong feeling of their being two "camps" within the company, and communication often breaks down to everyone's frustration. With difficult economic times there has been some struggle to keep classes full, causing a lot of teacher frustration and rotation. The Vaughan and Eglinton school locations are neglected when compared to Oakville.

Pros

I have worked at Merriam Music for the past 25 years and have fully enjoyed my job there! The students are dedicated to learning music and the staff is supportive creating a strong team environment. I have had many opportunities to learn new technology, perform with other teachers, work with others to create new and innovative ways of teaching and grow into my role as the Enriched Program Manager. Over the years, I progressed through many roles including Piano Department Head, Group Program Manager and Director of Examinations in addition to maintaining a studio of piano students and I enjoyed learning and developing my management skills through all of these roles. Merriam Music has always been open to ideas and feedback and I am proud to have been a part of the development and progression of the company. It is a great place to work if you are looking to teach, perform and be a part of a great network of dedicated musicians!

Cons

I don't have any cons about working at Merriam Music at this time.
