Pros
I enjoy translating the professional copywriting on a wide variety of topics and in numerous formats, from product labels to magazines. The fairly “hands-off” management style in the Creative Department gives me the freedom to produce beautiful and fluent translations that I can be proud of. I work with talented people, and I learn something new every day. Lots of company perks that increase the value of what I get paid.
Cons
Translation tends to be an afterthought for management, frequently resulting in urgent, time-sensitive projects that can be stressful. Understaffed translation team means more workload than one can handle, but hey, job security, right? Constantly busy also means sometimes sacrificing certain best practices to meet deadlines, like periodically cleaning up the translation memory database or staying up-to-date on SDL Trados training.
