Pros

Free lunch Free parking Interesting work Career prospects

Cons

Salary well below average rates. Almost everyone within the finance department knows they are drastically underpaid compared to market rates, you essentially have to take a pay cut for some relatively interesting work here. Oftentimes on staff dos most of the discussion would revolve around how underpaid we all were. Salary advertised at average rate then get offered 20% or so less. As a result staff turnover is ridiculously high, by far the most leavers I’ve ever experienced during my whole career. Lots of people also leave within a year for 30%/40% more pay elsewhere. I could count on one hand the amount of people who had been at the club more than say 3 years in a department of 50+. There was so many people leaving in really quite a small department that joint leaving dos were common. Then when people inevitably leave their workload is then passed on to someone else meaning everyone else has to work very long overtime just to cope whilst the person was being replaced. Easily avoided if the salaries were not even amazing, just fair. Senior managers in the department swindled huge pay rises for themselves but I’m told when questioned by people from other departments why the staff turnover within finance was so high their answer was oh well it’s Manchester United we can just quickly hire someone else. Not a very nice attitude to have and isn’t suitable for a department which is often put under such pressure and demands. Both the ridiculously low pay and huge pressure on others due to people leaving could be very easily avoided with simple benchmarking. The club ends up spending more on recruiters fees trying to encourage people to join the club on low salaries than it would cost to give everyone a fair salary.
