Pros
For me the number #1 pro is how much our leadership cares about our well being and general happiness at our job. They are always receptive and take open door policy seriously. As an example, throughout the pandemic and even weeks before most people were allowed to work from home, we were proactively given the go-ahead. They have even given us the option to work from home indefinitely until WE are comfortable coming back. Even then, they've done everything they can to create a safe work environment for the people who do want to continue to work from the office. We received a phone call from our CEO to go over our concerns individually, along with regular updates on how our firm is doing and what they are doing to support us. Communication during covid can be a challenge but I feel we handled our transition to working from home well, and management is regularly looking for ways for us to stay connected. They've managed to keep us positive and busy throughout this whole ordeal, and I really appreciate the job security. The next thing I really enjoy about MWM is the culture. The company as a whole does a great job of balancing a fun yet professional atmosphere, which can be a hard thing to manage sometimes. We have access to an outside personal/professional coach who helps during our review process and with any challenges we encounter whether it be work related or not. We enjoy happy hours, poker nights, ping pong tournaments and much more, along with some office amenities I wouldn't have ever expected from an engineering firm, all while doing an exceptional job and keeping clients and employees happy. It's a small-medium sized firm, with 40-50 people with a good amount of diversity. I like that one of the stated objectives of the company is to grow responsibly and not to sell out. I've personally gone through a company buyout as an employee. I wouldn't rate it as a positive experience at all, and it is a major reason I was open to recruitment at MWM in the first place. At a larger firm it's easy to feel disconnected from upper management and other departments, but it seems like people genuinely care for each other here, which isn't surprising given how long many of the employees have been here (20-30+ yrs!). The amount of long term employees here was a big draw for me when considering the position, because to me if a company can hang on to people that long, they must be doing something right, and that has only proven to be true in my time here. Lastly, I enjoy the job itself. I am challenged, encouraged, and critiqued by my team, and I've learned a lot in my short time here. I don't see myself plateauing anytime soon, and I'm confident that even if I did, I would receive the support needed to overcome that situation. Compensation and benefits are competitive with other companies in our industry. Health, Dental, PTO, 401K match, etc.
Cons
The only thing I can really nitpick about is my work/life balance at times. Our schedules are pretty flexible overall, but sometimes I end up working more than I'd like to, and feel like if I didn't I'd be letting down my team. Some people could see this as a pro, but I value my time outside of work. I think it also just has a lot to do with our deadline oriented industry, so I'm not sure it's anyone's fault other than my own for my career choice. Either way, the work load isn't unreasonable for our industry, I still enjoy the job, I'm grateful to be employed at a time like this, and the pros far outweigh the cons here in my experience.
