Pros

You do not have to be smart to work as a patient care RN. If you have not worked in an acute care setting in a long time and are unfamiliar with basic human anatomy and physiology, you would do well here.

Cons

If your IQ is above 75, you’ll be ridiculed by management and administration for advocating for patients. Administrators have not touched a patient in decades. It’s obvious since they are not current with modern medications, technology, and disease process. If you are home on hospice as a patient and are diagnosed with lung cancer and have four months to live and are currently stable, nursing administration and management will ensure that RNs will tell the family not to call 911 for emergent rectal bleeding or abdominal pain. They’ll instruct the patient and family to “administer morphine and not to call 911 because you will be kicked off the hospice service”. One of the directors of nursing is a social worker. Another has a doctorate with scant hospital and patient care experience. The pay is awful and there is never time and a half for nurses or social workers. Clerical associates get time and a half though. Trust me. Don’t work here.
