Pros

Great health stipends , leave benefits , health and dependent care accounts 401k/ 457, union represented . Overtime available for some positions. Usually friendly staff / co workers Steady work . Telework available to some staff Mileage reimbursement or fleet cars available when needed ( depending on department and. Job duties)

Cons

Each division within each county department has their own culture. Some places have time oriented work and micro managers . Others have a very relaxed view or invent their own HR policies .Things take a while to be approved due to budgetary issues or pre approval of public dollars. Promotions are usually in-house or management has someone in mind. Some clerical support go above and beyond while others barely do the minimum for the same pay. It’s getting harder to promote without a degree.

Pros

Great place to learn as a nurse and serve the community. Generally good camaraderie amongst staff. Good job stability and good benefits despite lower hourly pay than other top hospitals in the area.

Cons

Things are tightening up with ongoing reports of the "budget crisis." The working environment greatly varies by manager. You don't pay into social security, so many staff who work many years at the county feel "handcuffed" here because of the retirement benefits.
