Pros

There are some learning opportunities - but only under the right people. Some of the staff are friendly, sincere and understanding wrt your workload. It is possible to have a work-life balance here (under an understanding boss).

Cons

The sense of hierachy is very strong. You really feel your place here - at the bottom of the chain. Some people (including non-bosses) shout at, degrade, belittle, humiliate and/or verbally abuse anyone whom they feel is "below" them. Being treated like a child is a fact of life here. Lots of politicking amongst the staff and lawyers, as management does not have a good understanding of people's needs (except its own). Some bosses make their subordinates wait on them till the cows come home. You literally waste hours of your life doing nothing - except wait for your boss - on weekends. Some bosses also make their subordinates work unnecessarily long hours. Many subordinates understand that long hours are necessary if there is an urgent court deadline etc, but most of the time, the long hours are just there for the sake of it - to prove that people are working hard because they have to.

Pros

You learn to appreciate your free time.

Cons

Pointless long night meetings which we have to wait hours for eg we can be summoned back to the office at 2pm on a saturday at the last minute without regard for our personal time (saying no is not an option) and the meeting may only start at 7.30pm. If there were a big court deadline or trial we would understand but the reality is these meetings are simply for the purpose of hearing the boss talk (he needs a willing audience and the irony is, he is afraid to go to court...) We are treated like children by the support staff who lord it over us and get us to run their errands and do photocopying for them Quality of cases is not there so there is little if any room for professional growth Lawyers' salary is questionable and way below market rates.
