Pros
You can be yourself, flexible scheduling, co-workers in the department and Visitor Education are nice. No overtime required, you work reasonable shifts. Management within this department are both respectful and approachable. Parking is free for employees and very close to the building downtown.
Cons
As a part-time staff, you are not eligible for benefits of any kind; this means no insurance or 401K offered to you. If you're an adult supporting yourself, it's extremely hard to do so on $8.00 an hour. This would be OK if you were allowed to move up within the ranks after 6 months, however, after multiple years of working there I never saw any room for advancement.
Visitor Education and Visitor Services departments get along very well, but the upper management (VS and VE management excluded) and career professionals in this establishment seem to look down on you. They are always patting themselves on the back for accomplishments and almost never stop to acknowledge the VE or VS staff: be prepared to feel left out 85% of the time when projects or recognition is going on while you're left to do the grunt work.
If you're looking to develop your skills, or share ideas, you're better off applying to another department or for a higher position if you want to obtain any sense of fulfillment.
