Pros

Cool projects. Opportunity to work on projects that make you a better engineer. A few managers where very cool and wanted to see me succeed. Normal benefit package.

Cons

Even though it's a smaller company I didn't get many chances to choose what I worked on and play to my strengths. Customer requirements where all over the place on the system server, and sometimes would be wrong or incorrectly labeled and extremely confusing. Details for projects had to be pulled from multiple sources and compiled and triple checked for accuracy. I was an extremely talented engineer capable of creating and designing anything, but jumbled requirements made doing design work impossible. Coworkers would get mad when you asked too many questions about where the requirements where. Lots of coworkers with different communication styles which was kind of a bother. Inconsistent meetings, we'd go from getting status updates in meetings like normal to suddenly not having those meetings, and worse, that would change from normal status meetings to project managers walking by and asking when youd finish something and you'd have to answer "off the top of your head" giving them an inaccurate answer. There was no time to prepare for status updates in the detail they asked for. Some managers where very old school and would have meetings where they drill you on projects. For example you'd have a 200 x 200 excel table for a pricing estimate with complicated math inside and to start off the meeting they'd follow through the math immediately and try and understand it when I was unprepared to explain the math in that moment, thereby making it really confusing and setting the tone for 1-on-1 meetings. Some managers would use meetings to explain projects, which is akin to getting a complicated lecture in college and expecting to have taken good notes on every single detail, and when that method wasn't working they'd make 0 effort to, say, email you a list of requirements instead. Managers would not make any effort to adapt their communication style. Managers would raise their voices. If you are anything but a communication prodigy, make sure you make managers aware during hiring because you will struggle and be treated unfairly. Only one coworker would provide clear direction for projects i worked on for him, giving all details in an email explained clearly. Benefits package was lacking lawyer insurance which would have been helpful. Company had 2 / 20 engineers on PIPs which is a bad sign for a company that cannot work with employees properly. Location is terrible and very far from anything besides buc-ees, except the house prices where still 450k+ for a 1000 sq ft shack where the closest colorado-style activity such as mountain biking is over 30 minutes away, it's colorado prices with a florida salary and florida-level distance to activities. you are better off living in denver. Coworkers who liked the area only did because the extent of their weekend activities included a paved path at a park or skiing only a single time per year, utilising about 2% of what colorado is good for. The pay is very low relatively and not enough to afford a single family home in the area unless you have dual income.
