Pros

Healthcare Benefits Housing Subsidies Airfare Best opportunity as an ALT because of government support Sustainable contract that will last 3~5 years Depending on the Prefecture, ALTs can take great advantage of holiday time length

Cons

Every situation is different so you cannot depend on other people's testimonies right away when you are in a tight situation Not a lot of control over placement for Job Might require more money than anticipated for initial relocation to Japan Might require getting a drivers license Might require shilling out more money for bills than your fellow counterpart ALTs due to your housing situation or owning a car Might require more time dedicated to the ALT position versus others due to school placement like JHS, EH, and SHS positions as SHS positions allow for "ALT"s to spearhead an entire class on their own while ES teachers must handle multiple schools rather than one singular school.

Pros

JETs have support from CLAIR , their Board of Education, and local AJET chapters. CLAIR provides training, orientations, and even funding for teaching certifications.

Cons

Some ALTs co-teach actively and feel valued; others get stuck reading from a script. Your school, co-workers, and Board of Education make a big difference.
