Cons
In my experience, this is a high-stress, churn-and-burn environment where employees are expected to deliver at a very high level for minimal compensation, with no meaningful investment in long-term retention. Scope creep is constant, and responsibilities expand well beyond original roles without corresponding increases in pay, title, or support. Despite consistently working hard and taking on additional responsibility, promises around growth, role alignment, or future improvement were not followed through on. There is no formal performance review process, no structured development plan, and no clear criteria for advancement or compensation changes. Effort and over-delivery do not lead to stability or security. “Unlimited PTO” is misleading. There is no written policy, and while time off may be approved, using PTO is often followed by increased scrutiny or negative treatment, effectively making the benefit unusable in practice. Work-life balance is nonexistent. 50+ hour workweeks are common, and working evenings, weekends, and holidays is often required simply to keep up with the volume of work. Urgency is constant, new heavy projects are frequently introduced with unclear timelines, and core responsibilities continue to expand. Setting reasonable professional boundaries is not supported. The expectation is to continually take on more until burnout occurs. Although the company has been profitable during my tenure, there are no bonuses or profit-sharing opportunities for the employees responsible for sustaining and growing the business. For a remote company, the culture is highly isolating. In nearly two years, there were no in-person meetups, no plans for any in the future, very few meaningful check-ins, and no company-wide communication around direction or growth strategy. Most employees operate in silos with little understanding of the broader organization. Burnout and turnover appear to be ongoing patterns rather than exceptions.
