After several years of dedicated work, I experienced one of the most abrupt and demoralizing layoffs of my career. When the company I worked for was acquired by Humanz, employees were told that the transition would be smooth and that the acquiring company intended to keep the existing team. Instead, multiple long-term employees, including high performers, were let go almost immediately afterward with minimal severance. Communication throughout the process was extremely limited. I was never given the opportunity to meet with or speak to leadership before being included in a group layoff call. It was a jarring way to end years of loyalty and hard work. Many employees were also unaware that their previously earned equity would become worthless after the sale, which added to the sense of frustration and distrust. The internal environment after the acquisition felt increasingly political. Decisions did not appear to be based on tenure, performance, or contribution. Instead, there was a noticeable shift where certain individuals seemed to remain in good standing primarily due to internal alliances rather than merit. Even strong contributors with clean records and significant impact were let go without meaningful explanation. For future employees, especially those joining through acquisition, I would advise asking very clear questions about job security, severance, role expectations, and how equity will be handled. Transparency and empathy were lacking during my experience, and I hope the organization improves in how it manages people during times of transition.
