Pros

A great stepping stone for early in your career. Entry-level only for sales and service. Internal promotions are generally easy for direct contributors. There's little internal competition for career growth. Complacency is standard so it's easy to stand out. Product and engineering are other good career paths. Although the mission gets lost in internal bureaucracy, Homebase does do a good job for small businesses. It's easy to find your why and connect your work to it.

Cons

Leadership is stuck in old habits (performance is not rewarded because "that's part of your job", "they shouldn't time off because everyone should be super bought-in", "I hope our competitors switch to a 4 day work week"). Leadership communication is terrible, decisions are made without stakeholder buy-in. Some directors have a power trip complex. Middle management isn't given the tools to reach goals. No training/ poor training. Mediocre pay. Favorites (aka company priority) roles are compensated significantly better. Low psychological safety. Poor company culture and management/leadership relationship with contributors (except for engineering and product teams). Marketing is inefficient and doesn't drive tangible results (focused on vanity metrics). We also don't practice the content marketing puts out.

Hey there, I really appreciate the feedback–as much as it pains me to read it all. We’re certainly not perfect, and may not be right for everyone. That said, we definitely strive to do better than this feedback. I can also see you care a lot about our mission and the work we do, which is awesome. As you know, we just completed our quarterly culture amp survey, so I hope you shared the feedback there. Although a lot of this glassdoor review is pretty surprising to read, we’ll certainly calibrate with what we hear from the broader company. You’re at the company, so you know our culture scores are very good across the board, but that doesn’t mean we can’t improve. A few things I do want to make sure we clarify for our outside readers: We pay above 50th percentile for similar-sized VC-backed companies in every market we operate. Markets do change, so we do this role-based benchmarking exercise at least 2x per year because we care a lot about pay fairness. We definitely need to do more on the training front. This has lagged a little as we’ve grown the team quickly. We’re making some new investments here to help everywhere in the team. Our marketing team does great work that generates a lot of results for the company. But we also run some experiments that don’t work. We’ll keep learning and trying new things though! There is a lot of room for internal promotions here. We have seen many of our team members grow into leadership positions, or move cross-functionally into entirely new roles. But it’s definitely not because people are complacent; it’s because there is a lot of room for growth, and we hire great people! I’m excited to see more team members take on new opportunities as we continue to evolve and grow as a company.

Pros

Excellent leadership, smart and humble coworkers, and a product that genuinely solves the challenges of real small business owners — great if you’re mission-focused. The company is also super well positioned to navigate the AI transition through smart internal bets and the scale we’ve already built.

Cons

We’re so ambitious! It’s important we pull back and focus on doing fewer things extremely well.
