Pros

Great place to learn. Super cool and interesting cases. Decent benefits, aside from the health insurance.

Cons

The environment in the OR is toxic. Management plays favorites, there’s very little team effort, so many docs are abusive and condescending. The cases are long and difficult. The trauma you’ll develop with the things you see and have to do is all just too much some days. The pay is lousy, insurance is terrible. And if you don’t fit into their mold, they won’t like you and will look for reasons to get rid of you so they can hire other people who will fall in line. Any outliers or people not afraid to speak up won’t last long. There’s also never enough help and way too much call time. Also, the earned CTO makes it seem like a great benefit that you earn and can use at your leisure, but they will punish you if you use it when they don’t want you to. It’s ridiculous. And if you do get let go, they will be sure you don’t get unemployment. I gave several years of my life to this place and they let me go for a petty reason. Especially when I knew for a fact that there were other people in the OR who often had the same issue and they didn’t lose their jobs. Management plays favorites and they are cold and forget that they work with humans. There is no room for humanity or nuance here. Show up, do your job quietly, show no emotion, fit in and be a clone, don’t disagree with management. If you can do those things, you’ll be fine. And also, if you’re a nurse, you’ll get preferential treatment.

Pros

Friendly, safe and trusting environment, leaders that listen, lots of opportunities for training and development.

Cons

Inconsistent between different hospitals and leaders. Health insurance is awful and expensive. Bonuses only go to leaders, even though frontline staff are doing the actual work.
