Pros

I really beleive the Block software is the best for preparing taxes. They have the tax code down pat. The opportunity to work with taxpayers and interact with them on this essential part of their lives is priceless.......I am a changed voter now that I know what is going on with tax dollars.

Cons

Mis communication from the start sums up the experience at Block. It was communicated that i would be offered a position at a 40% more wage than that which happened. It was communicated that I would have access to senior tax associates and thus be able to learn quickly how to complete returns above the most basic level...that did not happen. On top of that, the Sr Tax Associates were resistant to assisting me when I was in an office with experienced tax preparers. The pay plan post first year was never communicated in a clear fashion...no objective narration of ANY pay plan was ever distributed. I was asked to work off the clock, promote Block on my personal socila media page, participate in marketing activities at my expense....all for a puny hourly wage and no firm promise of present or future compensation. I was not allowed to view personal email in the tax office, but expected to read and study numerous memos daily, and 1st yr preparers are not assigned an email account. I am satisfied with my registered tax return preparer status....but I will be looking for another way to practice the profession next season.

Pros

Flexible availability. Path for promotion is obvious and quantified.

Cons

Bonus/commission it is based on level and sales so is low in states without a state tax form. Hourly wage comes out of bonus. Pressure to sell items that don't add to your commission. They push customer surveys but you can be penalized if someone complains about the company, price, amount of emails etc even though you have no control. Some employees are frustratingly low quality and you will spend time helping or fixing their mistakes time that works against your commission. You are expected to answer phones, make appointments, scan, print, take money, help new comers all while maximizing returns. If you take over someone's client and find a mistake you are expected to work against your commission to file amendments peace of mind claims etc.
