Pros
My experience at Grocery Outlet was enjoyable enough. My coworkers were pleasant and made work fun. Training was more than adequate and definitely better than average for a retail store. We often promoted from within, though not always. It was my first "real" job, so it was a good start to learn how to deal with the stress of work. Grocery Outlet will typically take on inexperienced employees.
Cons
Although there were a fair amount of pros, there were more negatives to this job in my opinion. Compensation is quite low. At my store we started at $9.50 an hour for the courtesy clerk and cashier positions (min. wage is around $9.25), in comparison with $11-12 and up at other neighboring grocery stores. There weren't any benefits either. My boss was the sort of boss who would put you at just under the requirement for full-time in order to avoid giving you benefits. There was a high turnover rate at my store, with 5 managers and innumerable clerks and cashiers leaving during my employment. Many of my coworkers slacked off, called out all the time or didn't do their job well, leaving the reliable employees to do an unfair share of the work. Often I'd hear people saying, "well, I'd do a better job if I were paid better."
