Pros
If you get a good shop, nice management.. it can be a joy. My first shop was lovely. Had supportive, management who encouraged staff. Was completely transparent and everyone received breaks. Even management. Shop was also well run. The discount is nice too.. I suppose. It totally depends on who runs the shop. If I was still at my first shop, I probably wouldn’t have considered leaving. I regret leaving that place and not taking the management offer there.
Cons
Some managers are completely incompetent. Have no idea how to properly allocate rota’s. Labour laws are broken FREQUENTLY. If you progress into management at a shop like this, say goodbye to any time off and hello to back-to-back close opens, 14 hour shifts.. miscommunication and poor team moral. Made to feel horrible for taking any time off. Scared to speak up. Can’t make any plans with the 1.. 2 days off if you’re lucky. Because they’ll change the rota without your consent and no notice. Complain about working 6/7 days a week? Your hours are docked the following.. and considering you’re paid weekly.. It hurts. You’re not supposed to engage with shoplifters but brace yourself for a stern word about ‘not doing enough’ to prevent lifting. There’s also an issue with racism.. transphobia and homophobia from within the shop. Senior staff members being racist towards customers, dealt with so much transphobia against myself from shop staff, particularly the management team.
