Great company, surprisingly low pay - Developer GitLab Employee Review

Pros

Fantastic company to work at, for so many reasons. Company values are well-articulated and are reflected in the actual culture. The product is popular and growing. You can contribute to any aspect of the company/product at any time, as long as you're delivering your main assignments on time. The remote-only part is fantastically well orchestrated, if you're into that sort of thing. There's a good level of respect for work-life balance. You can take off time whenever you need, and you're not generally expected to work overtime at all. I also loved the freedom to buy whatever I needed to do my job -- office equipment, software, books, conferences -- and get reimbursed online without having to ask anyone.

Cons

GitLab pays its engineers less than market rate. This policy was documented in the GitLab Handbook until fairly recently: "We pay on the lower end of market rates for engineering positions because we offer the benefit of working on open source (great workflow, peers, build reputation); most engineers take a pay cut to join." When I was hired, this meant I was making about 30% less than I could have at a comparable position in my city. When I left for another company a year later (also remote-friendly), it meant a 70% raise.

Pros

Best company I've ever worked for. Strong culture, great leadership, competitive compensation, excellent work life balance, and a genuine focus on employee well being and career growth.

Cons

Fast paced environment and high expectations, but that's part of working at a successful, growing company.

Pros

OK pay or benefits in the market. Fully remote. Still is trying to frame itself as a big player.

Cons

Leadership went from being collaborative, communicative, and transparent, to being mercurial, secretive, and out of touch with the actual work. OBSESSSES over your AI usage metrics - even if AI doesn't help you and slows you down. The current layoff in progress was communicated poorly and not planned at all. And now they want us to adore the leaders and the company? Cultish vibes. We went from a company that plans ahead to a company that reacts.
