Pros

Good compensation and benefits. Ground‑breaking science, especially in HIV and virology. Meaningful mission—many employees join because they want to make an impact on global health.

Cons

Long hours are the norm, not the exception. There is an unspoken expectation to sacrifice personal time, nights, and weekends. Work‑life balance is discussed but not supported in practice. Heavy reliance on offshore teams and contractors. Much of the day‑to‑day work is outsourced—often not disclosed upfront—resulting in coordination with teams with a 13 hr time difference, which pushes meetings and work into what should be personal hours. Fear‑based, top‑down culture. Decisions flow one way: down. Leadership often uses pressure rather than empowerment, creating a culture where people are afraid to speak candidly or challenge harmful practices. Internal competition over collaboration. Departments compete for visibility and resources, which creates unnecessary tension. Employee well‑being is talked about but not lived. There is a disconnect between messaging and reality. Leadership often promotes wellness initiatives while simultaneously creating conditions that lead to burnout, turnover, and disengagement.

Pros

-The only pros are the amazing benefits - probably the best 401K I've seen as well as the highly competitive salaries.

Cons

-Lack of culture is a growing and rampant issue - there is a very high level of favoritism -Micromanagement from senior leadership - instances occuered where they essentially forced an employee to resign and not directly fire him/her just so that they wouldn't have to pay severence package, etc. Managers want to just make themselves look good and make it clear that your only job is to acf as if they are God's gift to this messed up planet. -Lack of proper communication and frequent unnecessary team meetings held which are a waste of time and do not accomplish any desirable results.
