Pros

It was fun to write articles, and for a time, they allowed all sorts of topics, so long as they were interesting, which encouraged me and other writers to contribute. Other writers are pretty friendly too.

Cons

They got more restrictive about topics, often focusing on the latest trends, to the point where things got samey. If you want to know everything about open-world games, they've got a ton of lists about the minutiae of them, but if you like other games (e.g. fighting games), you'll barely see anything new. It's also much harder to earn money from articles now than in past years, likely by design based on the new contract. It was basically a 50% paycut disguised as a meritocratic bonus.

Pros

Remote work At least it's a place to write about video games Entry-level job if you want to have a company name on your résumé

Cons

It's a content mill: quantity over quality, and the pay is not good Availability of articles on our portal is hit-or-miss (though that's to be expected in this industry) Not a ton of opportunities for career growth: even if you're at GR a while and do a good job, it doesn't seem like freelancers have many chances to earn a full-time/staff writer or editorial job. Lack of creative freedom/writer's voice when writing articles It feels like more time is spent formatting and following very strict guidelines than actually writing Editors seem to be at odds as to what the guidelines are, because they offer contradictory feedback on articles
