Pros

- Mission-oriented, flexible work environment that offers good work-life balance. - They do their best to be create an inclusive and equitable work environment. - There are a lot of opportunities to collaborate with other teams and meet people that are genuinely passionate about the work they do.

Cons

- Your experience depends highly on your department and supervisor, needs standardization. Some departments are favored more than others. - Most middle and upper managers have been there for way too long. You learn why no turnover at these levels is unhealthy, especially when managers do not receive sufficient training. - Expectations are not always clear, it can be a chaotic work environment if your supervisor does not know what they are doing. - Not all departments are synchronized the way they should be, especially for an organization where collaboration is necessary.

Pros

Staff that you work with day-to-day are usually some of the kindest, hardworking people you will meet. A good emphasis on work-life balance for middle management. Well connected and opens the opportunity to work with various community partners and other non-profits, if you’re looking to further your reach in those spheres. Working with residents can be rewarding, especially as you navigate relationships and build trust with them.

Cons

Upper management has had very little to no change over the past decade, creating a click culture — if you aren’t accepted by this culture, opportunities will be slim-to-none for growth. Even though employees are encouraged to take time off and utilize self-care to balance working with challenging residents, when there are situations that concern staff safety, there often isn’t a lot of support until it literally escalates to physical violence. Lack of support for employees of color, who are often victims of racist language used by residents. Pay is way less than working in conventional property management but the emotional demand is way higher.
