Pros

Helping people at the hub gives a great sense of fulfillment, coworkers are great, and its one of the few support/carer roles that don't require a drivers license making it more accessible. No weekend work is pretty cool.

Cons

Horrendous management culture that is based on intimidating workers, union busting, and forcing productivity out of staff and NDIS participants who pay to be there. Management states they are a workforce that is diverse and inclusive however they will harass you if you ask for days off (even if you have accrued leave and asked months in advance) at 'bad times'. They will totally change how you do your job at the drop of a hat and harass you if you give feedback regarding who these changes could be negative (even if this feedback turns out to have been correct months later!). They frequently break the law regarding union activity and actively try to prevent staff from attending outside work hours union meetings or intimidate them into "not needing to talk to the union". All this on top of really hammering into NDIS participants who are there to learn skills for having the audacity to... need extra breaks because of the disability (the reason they get NDIS funding in the first place). This makes the caring portion of the role- one of the few benefits to working there- hard because we see they are also suffering. On top of all of this pay is poor for the industry, there is little to no training provided (and what is provided is often of very poor quality), and very few actual benefits aside from what is government mandated. There is little room to move up or upskill in terms of training. The staff turnover is extremely high with about half the staff being totally different from a year ago, due to burnout, hostile management, and significantly better pay and benefits elsewhere. This also means there is often understaffing which is dangerous and stressful for staff.

Pros

The people you work with are genuinely amazing and will make things work even in the most difficult situations. It does feel like we're in it together. The work structure is flexible and their is often opportunities to progress to other roles past support worker.

Cons

Low base pay means even as a Senior support worker with years of experience or cert/degree in the sector you will be underpaid, overworked and undervalued, the restructure is still taking a toll on work loads and there is little to no care or precautions for burnout or workplace injury.
