New employees are usually hired only to replace an existing employee that management are unhappy with which creates a atmosphere of staff worrying whose next on the chopping board. I've seen people who are unknowingly training their replacement, then once they've trained them up their instantly sacked. All admin staff feel very disposable because of this. Those that aren't sacked tend to read the tea leaves and depart before they're next to be fired.
