Pros
Good perks for permanent employees. There are some good hardworking people here.
Cons
Although the role is listed as “Office Manager”, its true functions are that of a junior level facilities coordinator/ office assistant.
You will be responsible for washing dishes, keeping the pantry and refrigerator stocked, assisting staff with computer issues and systems issues, and delivering/receiving/and distributing mail among other junior level responsibilities.
The responsibilities are not the “con”, being misled to believe you’re an “office manager” is the con. You will be given no autonomy in this role. On the contrary, you will be micromanaged, misled, and manipulated by everyone in the office.
The office is a small, open concept space. You get no privacy, no desk, no cubicle, or office. Instead, your work station is at a table in the kitchen/pantry. As if sitting across from someone stuffing their face and leaving their mess behind for you to clean isn’t bad enough, prepare to endure all the noise and chatter that comes with being in a cafeteria. So if you need a quiet place to focus on your responsibilities and tasks, you will not get that here. It’s more like a fraternity house than a corporate office. And they have all the alcohol to back that up!
The underwriters are young, smart, recent college graduates and they are in the office everyday. They also engage in manipulative tactics like weaponized incompetence, gossip, and passive aggressive behaviors (e.g. leaving their trash in the middle of the floor for you to clean up, smearing food on walls and counter tops for you to clean up, leaving their dirty dishes filled with dried matcha and yogurt around the office and in conference rooms for you to clean up) etc. And don’t bother asking them to clean up after themselves, they will retaliate. They also look for ways to get a rise out of you. Your best bet is to not engage with their behavior.
They will also engage in flirting behaviors that borders sexual harassment.
Management turns a blind eye and will sometimes engage in these behaviors too. Which is a sign that the company’s culture is not only rotten at its core, it’s coming from the top down.
This role has a high turnover rate for a reason.
