Pros

The pros of working in higher education, and specifically at Emory are the flexible schedule, the fact that you get national holidays off and internal candidates are given preference for most positions. Also the University provides a lot of alternative commuting options to faculty and staff and overall it is a progressive place to work for.

Cons

Raises, specifically for staff, are not based on performance evaluations but on you initial salary - even if you transfer to a new department they will offer you a increase based on a formula. In that same vain, most departments are pretty flat, so if you want to advance you will more than likely need to leave your department.
