Cons

The company lacks strategy and clear business direction. The majority of management has no management skill (beyond authoritarian control) and doesn't know about basic business practices. The union is so strong that it's common to see union workers in the shop during business hours with their feet on the desk, playing on cell phones, since this activity is not punished. Some union workers strategically sabotage their work so that they can come in to fix it on weekends and get overtime pay. Communication and collaboration is dysfunctional beyond department borders. Culture is antiquated and highly resistant to change. "Stay in your lane" is a common phrase, and there is no interest in improving the company if it creates more work for someone else. Finger-pointing and blaming is rampant, which is comical because there is no accountability for wrongdoings. Information systems are barely digitized and access to information is very poor. Mistakes are commonly made repetitively since there is no motivation to create or modify procedures. Similarly, many engineering decisions are made based on the gut feeling of experienced people (who are nearing retirement), which leads to inconsistent results over time.

Excellent response to COVID-19, decent starting pay and fairly good benefits, especially for the area.

Cons

The industry itself is tied to the price of oil, or work is often cyclical and the quarterly mindset of the company leads to poor decisions in the long term.
