Pros

Covers your training, gives you new tools

Cons

- Does not replace your tools - Only helps the people they like (Look at the people they advertise on their front page) - If you fall behind, they don't help, they only pat you on the back and tell you to hurry up - Terrible pay - Every etco worker has a brand new car and new uniforms and everything, yet, can't increase the pay for the apprentices - They say they have good teachers... mine struggled to open the projector - Swapping companies under etco does not help, it only ruins your progress i.e starting over with a different company, meeting new people - You only talk to your coordinator every 6 months - Coordinator never picks up the phone - Never update you on anything, I NEVER KNEW I COULD GET NEW ETCO UNIFORMS! (Until I met another apprentice!) - Only good if you stick with one company for 3 years... if you're even lucky... - I tried following the rules with the on jobs by doing what I could only do, but instead, they told me to fake my answers in order to get it done

ETCO Response

Etco acknowledges that at times life can be a challenge while earning an apprentice wage. But it’s important to keep in mind the many other benefits of being an Etco apprentice – things like free healthcare insurance, free AA membership, the n3 discount card, and the toolkit and PPE equipment we provide for free. And then there’s the mentoring and wrap-around support you receive throughout your training. With Etco, you’ll continue to be paid during downtime, and can relocate to another Host if things aren’t working out for you. There’s also our wide-ranging 24-7 Switched-On support . . . remember budgeting advice is available via this service. Our apprentices generally finish their training much faster than non Etco apprentices, meaning you’ll be earning a qualified electrician’s wage much sooner than if you were not part of the Etco programme.

Pros

Mostly easily put into contracted work.

Cons

You pay for your initial training $2000+. You are paid training wage for your entire apprenticeship, which is WELL below minimum wage or living wage. Back out of agreements made before contract was signed (contract was only signed because of said agreements). Hiring and firing process is slack and remedial process is very intimidating. Aimed at young workers that think they have no other choice. Businesses pay double+ what worker is paid by ETCO and has the ability to drop said worker on a no notice basis.
