Pros
I really loved most of my clients and got along well with them directly. Lots of fun to travel around the state and see new places.
Cons
Working with Doggie Latchkey was a nightmare from the beginning. Owner was very opaque when it came to compensation - she was not direct about payment and I was paid between $35/ night and $50/ night to be at a home for 18-24 hours/ day + whatever travel time and mileage there was. At first, I wasn't too upset about the nightly rate, because I thought she was doing a lot of the admin that I really didn't want to do - like vetting clients, processing payment, and getting a lot of the care info for the pets. But as time went on, it became clear that she was charging so much more than what she was paying and really wasn't vetting clients - she started to send me into neighborhoods that I didn't feel safe in. And so much of the info that she had in the "portal" was out of date and inaccurate. Once, I commented on the fact that a client had recently moved to Michigan, and she said their family moved 7 years ago... The owner would also ask me to meet with new clients and provide an update to her about them, but did not pay me for time or mileage. When I started to deny trips and complained about being unpaid for these "meet and greets", she gave me $10 for a trip that was 4 hours round trip and over 150 miles for me. My clients later told me that she charged over $100 night and then an additional fee for staying through the day. Clients later told me there was also a large fee for cancellations, but I was never paid for cancelled trips either. I honestly can't believe I stayed for as long as I did, but I'm glad I didn't stay any longer. They also considered the work week from Sunday through Saturday, which was very inconvenient when you are mostly working weekends. It also meant that sometimes checks arrived in the mail 2 weeks after a job, even though clients paid in advance. They also started to get my address wrong (even though there was no change), so some of my checks arrived even later. Oh, and constant texting from the owner, even when I was not working. If you have any experience, you can definitely do this without an agency, and it will be so much less complicated and more fun than working for Doggie Latchkey.
