Pros
I was hired as an entry level sales representative as my first job out of college. I can honestly say that I have learned a ton, like coming to work every day, and I have made good money in my time here. The brokerage division of Cowan is fairly young (Cowan has only been doing brokerage for about five years or so). As a result, most hires in brokerage are either right out of school or maybe have a couple years or work experience. This is a results oriented business, the people who work the hardest generally have the best clients and make the most money. There are reports sent out every morning so everyone knows exactly where their numbers stand in comparision to other sales reps. My first year I am on pace to make about 45k - 50k, most sales reps in their second year are making between 65k and 70k. In the Baltimore area, compared to people I know and their jobs, that is not bad money at all.
Cons
-- Since Cowan is fairly new to brokerage, it is hard to tell where the division is headed. When I started there were 16 people in the Baltimore brokerage department, now there are 24. -- You can put in a lot of work, land a new customer, and if the carrier you plan on a load screws up, you look bad. It is part of the business, but still it can be frustrating. -- Typical work day is 7:30 am to 5:30 pm
