Pros

1) Decent Culture, 2) Face to face experience with Partners (Partners are approachable), 3) Can learn a lot about auditing the federal government (but you need to put in the effort), 4) Small business feel and mentality (If that's something you're searching for), 5) Promotes continuing education (provides compensation for work related continuing education), 6) Promotes quality work and quality assurance.

Cons

1)Salary on average is lower than industry competitors, 2) Lack of formalized training for new hires, 3) Due to lack of training, you spend a lot of time trying to teach yourself about government standards and jargon, 4)Depending on the project you get on, work hours can either be the normal 8 hours or constant overtime ranging 10-12 hours (so hope that you get lucky) 5) Experience can vary heavily depending on your manager (some are very helpful while others are hindering), and more than likely you will have to deal with multiple managers, 6) Very high employee turnover rate, 7) Average work-life balance, 8) Sub-par bonuses and raises.

Pros

- Cotton has competitive pay and offers flexible work schedules whenever engagements allow. - One of the best things at Cotton is that you are in charge of your success. Promotions are performance-based rather than seniority-based. - Cotton does its best to ensure their employees are happy and growing professionally. - Cotton does its best to adhere to its core values and principles, including work-life balance. - Cotton’s commitment to quality and professionalism is evidenced by the fact that it voluntarily undergoes a peer review every year, rather than the minimal every three years. - Cotton continuously strives to give back to not only the community via The Giving Committee which supports volunteer services and charitable giving, but also, Cotton’s Sustainability Initiative which focuses on sustainability and environmentally-friendly activities.

Cons

While the first half of this is a con, Cottons handling of these situations can also be seen as a pro. Your experience at Cotton will be directly linked with both the client and team you are assigned to. While I’ve had many positive experiences with both as discussed above, I’ve also had assignments and teams that made me dread coming into work every single day. Most partners and managers at Cotton are highly competent and lead by example, but unfortunately that is not the case for all. If you find yourself working under a partner or manager that does not understand the company's core value of 'Balance,' it’s important to communicate that to your advisor or anyone you feel comfortable speaking to in a position of influence. If possible, changes will be made in order to retain you.
