Pros

Working with animals; cats, dogs, small animals and even birds. A good core of volunteers from the community working alongside you. Training for new staff is good, well laid out and thorough.

Cons

Management. When you have management who have never worked the floor, it becomes very, very apparent that they have no idea what's going on, what the daily work consists of, etc. No advancement from within, new management staff brought in instead of looking to promote existing staff. Hugely clique-ish environment; management have favorites and don't hide it in any way. Certain staff can just make up things that didn't happen and report others they don't like. Not uncommon at all to see staff threatened with firing for daring to have an idea on how to make something better. Overworked staff especially during the pandemic (a pandemic management were painfully slow to respond to, firstly stating there wasn't one, then knee-jerk overreacting with draconian responses) , not uncommon to see staff crying, taking extended time off for mental health due to lack of compassion from management. A 'culture of mediocrity' - instead of trying to improve, mentioning that rooms weren't restocked, animal weren't graded is met with annoyance from management that it has been brought to their attention, rather than trying to fix the basics. During the pandemic, communication between staff collapsed, to the point that the only way of letting people know what had been done, etc, was for a mass text chat using your own personal devices, which degenerated into memes and photos and was almost impossible to use, with staff being complained at by management for _using_ their phones. It is hard to imagine a more harmfully toxic workplace, and certainly I have never seen one, nor wish to.

Pros

I love volunteering at the Connecticut Humane Society, helping those animals really gives me life. The volunteers/employees are nice and you can tell they all care for the animals.

Cons

I do not see any downsizes in volunteering there, I have only had great experiences there. I have nothing to complain about.

Pros

You will find a diverse group of people working here. All walks of life united by genuine compassion for animals that are looking for new homes and advocates for humane care. The friendships you make here will late for a lifetime. You will gain valuable skills in things such as animal behavior, maternity care, and assisting the medical department. The organization is a leader in their field. And who doesn't love a good snuggle/play session with the cats, dogs, and small animals?

Cons

Floor/front line staff bear the brunt of a lot of abuse from upper-level management and customers. Particularly in the intake department. This type of environment is prone to causing compassion fatigue and mental distress, but there is little to no support for the staff suffering from this. There is also a chronic problem with favoritism and several staff have been subjected to verbal abuse and veiled threats of termination for things as simple as speaking honestly about a situation. Many employees have been harassed to the point of quitting or having a mental breakdown resulting to their termination. In short, the workplace is toxic.
