Pros
CarMax is a truly honest company to work for with a legitimate desire to produce quality cars for their customers. They are also good about investing time into associates to develop them within roles or to help them get to the next level.
Cons
Mandatory corporate initiatives make their way down to the stores and they sometimes make you wonder if they even understand what occurs in stores on a daily basis. The absolute worst of these initiatives is the MTI (managing to the individual) program... when needed, it is highly effective, but they’ve mandated that all managers keep two associates at any given time on what is essentially performance management without the HR approvals. Well, when you manage small teams, consisting of less than ten people, that’s a little excessive. The associates feel that it is micromanaging, and I have to agree because at some point everyone on your team will have made it through the MTI plans, and then you must find the most minuscule opportunities to micromanage them on just to appease corporate’s demands.
