Pros

Really lovely colleagues, pay rises quickly with loyalty. Pretty good work/life balance.

Cons

The core business is deeply unethical. We were played incredibly troublesome customer service calls and told to pat ourselves on the back for not hounding people who are suicidal... No one at the company acknowledges this, but equally, no one cares deeply or is passionate about the work (who would be?!). Hybrid work is RIGID, the office is full Tues-Thurs and empty Monday & Friday because everyone working here is doing so just to collect a paycheck, so are in the office exactly as often as management mandates. The fact that the culture is entirely benefit-driven (again, since no one cares at all about their job) motivates management to have a very competitive, publicly displayed promotion system. Your promotion will be announced on a screen with everyone else's. One final consequence of the fact that everyone at the company has to be extrinsically motivated is that they HIGHLY reward loyalty to keep people from leaving - yes, the frequent payrises are great, but if you have top skills and come from outside then you will be inserted at the bottom, despite your experience. I would recommend this company in the UK primarily for new grads who can't get a job somewhere better or only care about money.

Pros

Some of the smartest individuals in their fields. The focus is always “forward” and the company is willing to adopt new tech to stay ahead for the purposes of the company’s (key word there) benefit. Great PTO and benefits.

Cons

The company’s drive to keep itself moving forward has caused it to regress in other aspects. As a leading tech company first, and leading bank second, it’s embarrassing what their stance is on hybrid and remote work. The company can easily accommodate remote options for their employees not near main offices, but chooses not to. I am relocating to a major city with no major CapOne presence and their response was “too bad, either fly up weekly or you’ll be terminated for not meeting the hybrid requirements”. It’s embarrassing because most of my week is remote anyways. I wonder how many current and past employees have been impacted, and I’m worried about how much talent they’ll be pushing away in the coming years.
