Pros

Great coworkers for the most part. Semi-flexible schedule. Remote work.

Cons

CEO severely oversells the compensation, bonuses and resources available during the interview. It will seem like you're going to make a lot of money in a company with a strong remote culture, lots of support, excellent training and freedom, but it's all smoke and mirrors. Bonuses rarely, if ever, come in at the amount said in the interview, countless meetings, social events and training presentations make it impossible to have a truly flexible schedule, there is no real interactive training - it's all presentation form with most employees struggling to follow. CEO and top managers over-promise clients with impossible deadlines and expectations, then leave employees to handle the push back when expectations aren't met. There are very few resources to accomplish the work promised to clients.

I was really disheartened to read this review. I'd like to provide some additional context because the experience you describe doesn’t reflect the working environment and company culture we all enjoy and have worked so hard to cultivate. In the interviews, we share bonus amounts earned by both the average and top 10% of consultants. Those numbers are accurate, so I’m guessing your overselling comments refer to my expressed belief that you, or indeed anyone we hire, is capable of achieving average or even top 10% performance. We hire you because we believe in you! So why didn’t that happen in this case? I think it eventually would have, but there were a few hurdles: you were only with us for 6 months, you missed half of the onboarding training, and your resume claimed relevant experience it later turned out you didn't have. Therefore, you required more ramp-up time and training than anticipated. We put a lot of thought and effort into our training program, and many employees come away from their time here with significantly improved marketing skills. I’m not sure why you would say the training isn’t interactive: in addition to the presentations and readings, there are collaborative practice tasks, 1-on-1 coaching from management, a dedicated mentor, and small group discussions. We’re certainly mindful that too many meetings inhibit flex time, so we currently have only 3 all-company meetings each month: 2 training/ information sharing meetings and 1 optional team bonding event. Other smaller group meetings like monthly team huddles, 1-on-1 check-ins with your managers, and biweekly sprint reviews for each client, are scheduled around each team member’s flex time. It is true, however, that we’re a company that likes to collaborate and help one another tackle big challenges, and wouldn’t be a good fit for someone who is hoping to avoid interacting with their colleagues. I was disappointed to read you didn’t feel you were given adequate resources to achieve results for clients, and would love to hear what additional resources you would have found helpful. At CanIRank you will work directly with (and learn from) smart, experienced marketers from top agencies like Greenlane, Publicis, and Foxtail who have managed SEO campaigns for companies like Dell, VitaminShoppe, and AdBlock. In addition to peer support and extensive training, we have an extensive library of processes, our own toolset, tons of algorithmic data, and stipends for tech and learning. More specifically to your case, when you mentioned you were struggling we cut back on your client hours, gave you extra 1-on-1 coaching, and brought in experienced teammates to pick up the slack, even though it meant losing money on those clients in the short term. I know we still have things to improve, and we’ll certainly keep working hard to increase the odds that every consultant we hire will succeed here. I know it sucks when it doesn’t work out, and I’m really sorry that we couldn’t come through for you. -Matt

Pros

Tons of talent in the agency. I learned so much from some of my peers.

Cons

Client management was a mess. Expectations were unrealistic on the leadership end, then specialists were left trying to deliver. Pay was abysmal. Benefits were lackluster. Taxes were all kinds of funky.
