Top botique transportation consulting firm with minimal growth prospects - Senior Associate Cambridge Systematics Employee Review

Pros

Cambridge Systematics has played an historical leadership role within public sector transportation consulting, particularly around demand modeling. Because of this, they continue to attract top tier talent, particularly in the form of freshly minted Ph.D.'s from major civil engineering programs nationwide. Thus, they do a lot of the high end, interesting work.

Cons

Despite these plusses, their partnership model and conservative business culture has caused them to miss major technology trends and business opportunities over the past two decades. Because of this, career opportunities for new associates are limited to a select few. Additionally, mentoring and staff development is an afterthought.

Pros

Great culture with intelligent, caring people.

Cons

Limited advancement depending on the role but I’m not bothered by this currently.

Pros

Promotes from within, maybe too much so (no new, fresh ideas). Sponsors visas for those that need them. Some interesting work going on at the firm on the edges. Very uncoordinated though. Pay is above average in my experience at more senior levels at least.

Cons

Really poor senior management with no real vision for where to take the firm. Focus only on "shiny things". Most senior leaders have only worked at CS, so have no clue how to run a company. Needs fresh blood. Board is only partly independent. I didn't realize how much this mattered. My sense as I left: the firm was trying to get rid of senior/expensive people in lieu of younger employees or folks that needed sponsorship that would work for cheaper and help bring down overhead costs. Also people who would "put up or shut up". Not the best way to see your faults and improve on them.
