Pros
Union company with good benefits
Cons
Progression and advancement limited by who you know. I was a technician there for years. Made it very clear I was interested in advancement to foreman and desired to better myself. Was never officially promoted. They would have me run jobs, and organize workforce. Basically do everything a foreman is supposed to do, but would not put me in a company truck, or give me the pay that a foreman is supposed to make. Meanwhile, the Project Manager would hire people from their previous company and bring them on as a foreman right out of the gate. Work truck, pay raise, everything.
Also, when I would ask what I could do to better myself, how or where did I need to improve, what were they looking for... Nothing. I was told, "you're doing great. Keep doing what you're doing. I just want to make sure you have the skills necessary to be a foreman before we put you in that role". None of which is helpful in any way. I finally had to take a job elsewhere for less money simply because the new company actually put me in place as a foreman so I can finally start growing and learning more. I hate to lose the benefits from the union, but I felt it was necessary for me to finally grow to where I want to be.
