Pros
There are SOME decent folks who work there that I miss and in my role, I had a pretty flexible day as far as the freedom to get up, go take a walk, mid-day appointments, etc. As long as the work gets done in a timely fashion. I would say that is the ONE thing done right.
Cons
- Salary is below industry standard, but take it or leave it. The problem is when raises are perm frozen & it takes you 5yrs to get 100% of the pitiful 1% 403B retirement matching. Very tight-fisted. When I asked about matching & benefits in my interview, I was told I'd have to ask HR later. Very clever avoidance.
- People seemed to leave a lot under mysterious circumstances & there was a lot of hush hush surrounding them. I took the gossip with grain of salt, considering who it was coming from, A person I knew to exaggerate & have a bad attitude towards many co-workers, but now, after having experienced it myself, I have to believe it. After giving them a month & a half notice (which would have kept me there to help during the extremely busy Homecoming season out of the goodness of my heart), I was repaid with being let go early, without an exit interview (Which speaks volumes about how much they care about employee’s opinions or “making things better”.) No concern what-so-ever.
I was shocked, then to see folks whom I considered friends in town, who would barely look at or say two words to me...like I did something wrong. I was even told by a co-worker that "it was wrong how I just left like that", further confirming that misinformation is spread about people who leave. Left like what? I gave so much notice and went around apologizing to all my seniors, clarifying that I just simply needed more money & it was nothing personal. Then they stabbed me in the back. Lovely faith-based organization.
- People are jerks everywhere, but you kind of expect more from Christians, but some of the professors and students who are put into leadership positions (and get swelled heads) really know how to lay on that passive aggressive and often, thinly veiled aggression to get their way. I’ve worked in many churches though, and it’s not surprising, but never not disappointing. You’re definitely going to have to bow to some pretty spoiled, awful people here, among the FEW good ones you look forward to serving in your role.
