Prestige and connections, but challenging work environment - Consultant Boston Consulting Group Employee Review

Pros

The biggest pro is the prestige - once you have their name on your resume, that'll open a lot of door especially on IB side. The people whom your work with have a decent caliber - I wouldn't say the brightest but above average for sure (this is only true for interns, associate, and consultants). If you're lucky you'll make long lasting connections with someone in the industry.

Cons

Basically, this place is run by boomer/millennial MDPs who depend on Interns & Associate who can make them feel younger, read between the lines, and can work 70-90 hours per week. If you're one of those type-A highly communicative gen Z then you might be able to shirk away some responsibilities and survive by working ~ 60 hour per week. Travel gets worse. The MDPs will take you out for dinners and parties which will feel amazing at first because you'll get validation for a industry veteran. Sooner or later you'll realize later the MDPs aren't really smart but they just have good connections in the industry. For some reason, they don't want to hangout with their family and want to drink wine or whatever with younger folks. Oh keep an eye on predator - there are only a few and easy to figure out which ones.

Pros

BCG has top tier benefits, really smart colleagues, good in-office perks, and has a great company reputation. This was a huge part of my experience and has made me go back forth about my decision to leave.

Cons

This is speaking as someone who is not on the consulting side. On my particular team, office politics were very strong with little to no opportunities for people outside of the inner circle to assimilate. More broadly, I feel like the salary trajectory was a little slow, there is a lack of location mobility and and promotions can be hard to come by. Even so, I have personally seen exceptions be made for certain people. More broadly, being located in North America can be difficult since new roles are being open in other regions which is making internal mobility next to impossible. If you have any dissatisfaction with your current team, title, or level - there's a real possibility that you will have to wait multiple years before being able to make meaningful shifts towards your long term career goals.
