For what it's worth, we do not have an 8:30-5:30 expected norm. And it's very much about impact over effort as it's always been here (or we hope anywhere), but if we were to have a genuine conversation about this particular situation and actual time of day/night being referenced in this review, the 9:30-7 or 10-7 reference would actually be 10:00'ish-5 or 10:30'ish-5:30p regularly which we can say was not cool since there was very little and inconsistent communication about these personal needs. It is beside the point that we are talking about a Manager and one of the team's defined leaders who would then not be able to partake in our standup meetings (which has since shifted to afternoons). This was really bad signaling to the rest of our team and raised lots of questions from everyone.
We understand that talented software engineers can choose where they spend their time and we're supportive. This was a unique situation where it was best for both parties to grow in different directions and we believe the company communicated frequently and patiently about the cons listed in this review.
