Poor Upper Management, Low Pay, No Opportunity, No Benefits - Assistant Manager Big 5 Sporting Goods Employee Review

Pros

Coworkers are usually fun to work with. Not too difficult to learn the job.

Cons

From my experience: Upper management is not it touch with employee morale or the experience of actually working in the store day-to-day. Raises are rarely given out, Most the products in the store are poor quality in my opinion, the products that are good quality are typically way overpriced, Relief managers and part-time managers are paid little more than minimum wage. Upper management favors reducing hours to save money on payroll, so if you're part-time while you're struggling to get enough hours to pay your bills and taking on a higher workload on the clock for low pay because the store is minimally staffed the supervisors are congratulating for keeping hours low. Some stores get more hours than others, though for questionable reasons. In my experience, the quality of employees has gone down drastically and turnover rate has increased in the last few years due to uncompetitive wages and expectations/treatment from upper management.

Pros

Most employees were really fun to work with, life/work balance was great, taught me good life skills, good first job for work experience.

Cons

Barely got scheduled (pretty sure my location was way over employed), occasional rude and entitled costumers (especially during the holidays), could get very slow and boring at times, sketchy area, overal, not a great job if you're looking for something that pays well.
