Pros
It’s easy to make friends. Working from home is possible. Salary and package is pretty good (about £24k + travel paid for a 22 year old 2nd year Trainee Surveyor). There is annual salary increases and small bonuses (£500ish) A good place to start out at but don’t count on advancing your career here at Axis. It is impossible to get chartered here due to lack of experience and qualified surveyors to mentor you.
Cons
There is no structure to the apprenticeship programme, you are just thrown into a team and left to get on with it. Most of the time trainees are just completing admin work and not learning or visiting sites at all. You will never be put on a training course or seminar to advance your knowledge. The projects are fairly boring to work on and they don’t require much input from Surveyors. Senior management never check up on trainees because there are just so many of them! Basic processes like payments to subcontractors are outdated and always result in issues. Surveyors are expected to take on accounting roles which shouldn’t be the case. The company seems to be run like a small family company when it is a multi million pound main contractor with hundreds of employees.
