Pros

Great teammates and a good name to have on a resume

Cons

The culture was fantastic in the early days and it truly felt like a great place to work. Unfortunately, it has gone downhill and is now failing terribly. Leadership acts impulsively and always chasing the next shiny idea without a real plan, all the while abandoning projects that are still in progress and then blaming the failures on employees. Entire teams have been laid off with as little as two days’ notice. They’ll claim they’ll “do their best” to relocate people internally but when you reach out to recruiters, you’re ignored and treated as if you don’t matter. It’s a toxic environment through and through. Layoffs have become routine and unpredictable. Three major ones happened during my two years there, each without warning. Managers change frequently, and with that, any promises of promotions disappear. Even when you exceed your quarterly goals, you’ll only receive a “meets expectations” rating because leadership doesn’t want to promote anyone. The disconnect between what is promised and what actually happens has left morale very low at all times unfortunately. After the layoffs, remaining associates and senior associates were burdened with additional work, yet no promotions or raises were given. Leadership reposted other roles with expanded responsibilities but at lower salaries. Management has become toxic and heavily micro-managing doing whatever they can to undermine confidence and make employees second-guess themselves.

Pros

It's the least toxic newsroom I've ever worked in (which isn't saying much) BUT my colleagues genuinely care about me and vice versa. Leadership is pretty transparent and regularly communicates with staff, even when it's hard. I've been given room to grow and learn, and I've seen similar opportunities arise for others.

Cons

There have been some growing pains as the company leaves its start-up era.

Pros

Fully remote work, competitive salary

Cons

Other recent reviews are spot on. Culture and morale has deteriorated in recent years, along with any sense of clarity or direction around the company’s mission and goals. The company seems to be growing too quickly with little strategy. Management will make a show of seeking feedback, but companywide decisions are made abruptly and are handed down from the very top. Layoffs have become a frequent occurrence. The institutional focus is less on fostering quality news gathering and sharing, and more on bolstering the appearance that the CEO is some sort of AI guru. Employees are pushed to “use AI” as much as possible with little direction or resources, and concerns about the tech’s limitations are brushed off. The results? Low quality “AI tools,” and a high tolerance for slop oozing its way into previously high quality output. Leadership and a few favorites receive praise, promotions and preferential treatment, but generally employees burn out quickly from frenetic pacing, understaffing and constantly shifting priorities. Many are either checked out or looking for other opportunities. Stay far away.
