Pros

Free coffee, mostly nice and welcoming people

Cons

There is very limited flexibility, which is likely to become more challenging following the recent announcement increasing office attendance from three to four days per week. This is particularly difficult for working parents, especially as the company’s family-friendly policies appear to lag behind many other private banks. In my experience, management and HR tend to align closely and support each other’s decisions, which can make it difficult for employee concerns to be addressed internally. The only way I was able to have my concerns heard was by contacting the organisation’s external helpline. I made complaints about being bullied and picked on by my manager to various members of HR but nothing was ever done and sure it won’t be now I’ve left.

We take any concerns about behaviour in the workplace, including allegations of bullying, very seriously. When concerns are raised, we encourage colleagues to speak up and we work with them to understand the issue and consider the most appropriate way to take things forward, including through independent channels where colleagues may feel more comfortable doing so. We are committed to ensuring that concerns raised by colleagues are listened to and considered carefully. Supporting colleagues through different life stages is also important to us. We offer enhanced pay and leave for a range of family-related circumstances and, where roles allow, aim to provide flexibility to help colleagues balance work and personal responsibilities. We know experiences can differ, but we remain committed to creating a respectful and supportive environment for everyone who works here, and we continue to review how we work to improve the colleague experience.

Pros

I like the environment and how the bank operates. It’s very hands-on and you’re expected to take ownership, which suits how I like to work. I’ve worked in similar environments before and generally prefer it to the hierarchy you get at big banks. I've found that the leaders across the business I deal with are approachable, accessible, and welcoming of good debate. I’ve always felt comfortable being myself at work. Work/life balance has also been good. I’m a bit of a workaholic, but I’ve never felt pressure to be online outside normal hours which are typically 9-5. Recently I went through a promotion process and felt it was handled well. Like any interview process there were nerves involved, but I felt supported by my line manager throughout. The process itself was pretty standard compared to elsewhere I’ve worked... competency interview with two senior leaders and a presentation to an ExCo member. Given the size of the bank, there isn’t always a completely defined progression path, but in my exprience with the bank growing there are good opportunities for people who are proactive about their development.

Cons

As with any smaller banks growing quickly, there are growing pains, but nothing I haven’t seen elsewhere in similar environments. Personally I’d rather be somewhere like AL that is growing vs the alternative!
