Pros

Eh! None in my opinion.

Cons

My experience at AppFolio started off great but ended horribly. I survived two rounds of layoffs, constant gaslighting, and repeated exposure to client abuse with little to no support from leadership. What was once a company built on empathy and transparency has turned into a toxic environment full of favoritism, fear, and manipulation. Leadership at multiple levels lacks accountability and emotional intelligence. Concerns are ignored, retaliation is subtle but real, and promotions are based on who you know, not the quality of your work. The culture has become performative, especially around “inclusion” and “feedback.” They’ll ask for it, but they won’t listen to it. There’s an unhealthy obsession with being “innovative,” to the point where it kills productivity and morale. They constantly roll out new software tools, tracking systems, and “efficiency” initiatives that micromanage and overwhelm employees instead of helping them. To the point to where you can’t even leave your work desk AT HOME, to grab a drink of water etc. More time is spent on making the employees live a living hell than actually serving the client, which completely defeats the purpose. It’s innovation for the sake of optics, not impact. There’s also an unrealistic fixation on hitting perfect KPIs instead of focusing on genuine client satisfaction ..and most clients aren’t satisfied, largely due to constant price increases, software issues and lack of access to customer support. Clients are overcharged, employees are underpaid, making the rich richer!!!! No one that works at Appfolio has a healthy work life balance.. NO ONE! There are incredibly talented, hardworking people at AppFolio who genuinely care about customers and each other, but they’re overworked, undervalued, and unsupported. If you’re thinking of applying, read more employee reviews and do your research. What they sell publicly about culture and growth absolutely DOES NOT match the internal reality.

Thank you for sharing your experience and candid feedback. We’re truly sorry to hear your time at AppFolio ended on a disappointing note. We value every employee and their well-being, and it’s upsetting to learn your experience felt negative. We’d like to address a few points for clarity: First, there is no policy restricting employees, remote or in-office, from stepping away to get water, take breaks, or care for their well-being. We believe in high performance and innovation, but never at the expense of health or balance. Second, we take all claims of unethical behavior seriously. When any complaint is filed with HR, it is handled confidentially, investigated thoroughly, and addressed with appropriate action. The suggestion that nothing is done is inaccurate and does not reflect how we operate. Finally, we understand your frustration regarding "PR answers," and we want to assure you that our commitment to feedback is genuine. We invest in multiple channels precisely because we know that actively listening to our employees is how we truly improve. We wish you the best in your future endeavors.

Pros

Frequent team outings and social events that help build relationships across the team. Generally a friendly, social environment!

Cons

The property management team is highly competitive when it comes to promotions, and I’ve seen BDRs remain in the same seat for years or eventually leave, as internal advancement opportunities can be limited. However, for top performers, there is promising upside, and you get to work with some of the best leaders in the organization. On the investment management team, leadership quality is more uneven, and there appears to be a lack of management experience, which has created gaps in coaching, accountability, and overall team development. As a result, performance outcomes have lagged, with the majority of BDRs and AEs struggling to consistently hit target. Team turnover has also been notably high, and leadership engagement only increased after a large portion of the team had already decided to leave, which by that point felt too late to rebuild morale or trust.

We take your comments seriously – especially regarding the need for proactive management support, better coaching, and clearer advancement opportunities for our BDR and AE teams – and we are actively working to address these areas to ensure our reps feel supported and set up for long-term success. Thank you again for helping us improve, and we wish you the very best.
