Pros
I joined Andela because I was compelled by the vision and the model. What made it special was the people. I can’t imagine a more committed, driven, humble, and intelligent group of people to build a company with. Andela draws leaders and team members from a diverse set of backgrounds and rewards merit above all else. Transparency, curiosity, and kindness are critical to being successful here. Through rapid growth, the company has been able to retain the positive elements of startup culture — especially the fast-paced, high intensity, tight-knit team environment that makes you feel like you're consistently learning and that your work has meaning.
Cons
Andela requires a level of commitment and passion that isn’t easy. If you think about it like any other job, it may not be all that rewarding. But if you’re willing to have tough conversations and challenge the norm, while also working to establish meaningful relationships based on trust and mutual respect, you’ll find a deep sense of purpose and accomplishment in being a part of this team. Another thing to note for US hires: Operating in Africa is not simple and requires a bit of humility — what applied in your last role may not work here. If you’re prepared to listen, incorporate feedback, and be perpetually curious, you will be able to have a huge impact on the company and on the world.
