Pros

Good health insurance with a single, affordable price for the whole family, a pension plan that offers more security than Social Security, an easy job that requires your full time commitment, including weekends and holidays, but can be personally rewarding.

Cons

Amtrak offers no sick time or PTO, and management is ineffective, often absent, and hesitant to make decisions when the organization is struggling—largely out of fear that upper management won't support them. They also lack fundamental knowledge of train and engine operations. As a result, crews often find themselves managing operations with little guidance, leading to frequent conflicts and a negative work environment. Dangerous working conditions persist as rail and equipment issues are reported but never addressed due to budget constraints. Meanwhile, management receives large bonuses while frontline workers face cuts. The new Acela program has been a disastrous failure and a waste of taxpayer money, and current equipment struggles to make even a single trip without engine failures. New hire assistant conductors receive subpar training from a program designed by college students rather than experienced railroad professionals. Payroll regularly attempts to deny payments owed due to contract violations, such as short-consist runs or being called but not used. Backpay for wages owed under an expired contract is taxed at an exorbitant 45%, further undermining workers. The union provides minimal support, often sacrificing members' rights in exchange for minor pay increases. Employee facilities are in disrepair, with black mold, faulty wiring, poor water quality, overcrowded common areas, and a severe lack of lockers—sometimes requiring multiple workers to share a single one. And perhaps the most demoralizing part of the job is constantly having to apologize to frustrated passengers, who miss flights, cruises, holidays, appointments, and court dates due to Amtrak's poor service. To make matters worse, the Northeast Corridor, which is the backbone of Amtrak’s operations, saw very little—if any—of the funds from the infrastructure bill. With so much taxpayer money allocated for rail improvements, we should all be asking: where exactly did that money go? It’s hard to see any of it improving the conditions or service we rely on.

Pros

Great friends and Travel with plenty to see

Cons

The culture is horrible it’s a very demeaning please. They will fire you for anything. Harassment amongst employees and by management to their employees Is extremely high. I have a MBA degree and I still can not move above the customer service level. I’m a union member and you have to pay union dues to work a non management position. The union Reps work for Amtrak to so there is a conflict of interest. The union is TCU in which they defend the company 100x harder than they do their members. TCU is not organized very well. The pay is fairly well but after union dues in medical and taxes are withdrawn your net income makes it look like you are making at least 15 to 17 an hr. As far as Work culture at Amtrak it is fueled by many rumors and those rumors are more affluent then your resume .
