I'm ashamed to tell people I work for Amtrak - I usually say I work somewhere else. - Withheld Amtrak Employee Review

Pros

(1) Some of the people are actually pretty nice to work with. (2) You can get decent retirement benefits - if you retire with enough years of service.

Cons

(1) You never know what your budget will be year to year. Amtrak is partially funded by the US Government. Politicians are in a cost cutting mood, and Amtrak's budget was severely reduced. Layoffs are underway and will be for most of 2012. (2) DC politicians love to cut Amtrak's budget, even though Amtrak's share of the pie is miniscule. (3) This is a government job without government benefits. Many employees are lifers and simply hanging around until retirement. (4) With a few very recent exceptions, Amtrak technology is 20-30+ years old. (5) Amtrak has lost money every year of its 40 year history. (6) Despite the current economic climate, given a choice between unemployment and a job at Amtrak, I cannot stress enough that you remain on unemployment and continue looking.

Pros

Great friends and Travel with plenty to see

Cons

The culture is horrible it’s a very demeaning please. They will fire you for anything. Harassment amongst employees and by management to their employees Is extremely high. I have a MBA degree and I still can not move above the customer service level. I’m a union member and you have to pay union dues to work a non management position. The union Reps work for Amtrak to so there is a conflict of interest. The union is TCU in which they defend the company 100x harder than they do their members. TCU is not organized very well. The pay is fairly well but after union dues in medical and taxes are withdrawn your net income makes it look like you are making at least 15 to 17 an hr. As far as Work culture at Amtrak it is fueled by many rumors and those rumors are more affluent then your resume .
