Pros
Salary and benefits are good Remote work for most positions Most middle-management and non-management people are wonderful to work with
Cons
Zero job security whatsoever - in IT, they have had reorganizations with reductions in forces 8 times since 2005, and each of the past three years. Last week they cut 25% of the IT staff with no warning, and the CIO stated he doesn't yet have a plan for handling the work they did. Leadership does not trust its people and cannot make decisions without paying for external consultants. In IT they have engaged with three different consultants in three years to try to set their strategy. And when they bring in consultants to do work, leadership never commits to having them transfer the knowledge on the projects they've done, ensuring that some consultants have essentially become permanent (and expensive) fixtures. The company spends absolutely nothing on the development of its people anymore. In fact, the cost-cutting is so severe that you can't spend more than an hour or two per week in meetings to get actual work done, so forget about training. The expectation is that inefficient processes are to become fully automated, but there aren't enough people to keep the systems running anymore, so there's zero chance of that optimization happening without hiring still more consultants. There is zero transparency from upper management anymore. it used to be that VPs and directors knew individual contributors and it was not uncommon for them to stop and talk to anyone about anything. Today's leadership really does sit in its ivory towers and hand down orders (which usually involves cutting more costs). It appears that the end-game is to fully outsource IT. This has not been explicitly stated, but given the sheer volume of people let go since 2019, that would support the conclusion. The business has zero idea as to what technology actually costs. They want and need dozens and dozens of systems to do their jobs, but they never actually pay for them; IT covers those expenses, so all the business sees is a "bloated" IT budget, ripe for cutting. The company says they're invested in the communities in which they operate, and in many ways they are, but outsourcing technology jobs to India via consultants does seem pretty hypocritical in that regard.
