In 2015 I was fired after attending two funerals in the winter. The first, my great grandfathers funeral I expected and gave notice. I back to Winter Park and worked for about a week, including on Christmas Day and the day after. My younger brother committed suicide in Dec 26th (while I was at work) and once I got home found out, I called in. I spoke to the shift manager, a female whose name started wit A. She advised that I not come in because of how distraught I was and to “take as much time as I needed”. My family is from one of the Carolinas and I flew home to bury my brother, but due to the cold, it took a month to physically get him into the ground. The entire time I stayed in contact with A and a male manager (can’t recall his name, short stocky Caucasian man) to keep them updated. When I got back I was told by the restaurant manager that I no longer had a job and that they “had given me more than enough time to grieve with my family.” This is a direct quote. This was said to me by a manager who was very tall, of Latinx or Hispanic descent, with glasses, who was a former Disney employee. Two months prior to that they had fired one of the kitchen staff when his elderly mother, who lived with him, died in their home. The manager A was married and openly sleeping with another member of the staff, in another department, to the point that she would dissapear during the shifts and even got caught once. It was common knowledge that one of the servers kept their cocaine at the server station in a holiday decoration. There was a trans woman on staff when I was working there who I can’t speak for, but from what I saw, received discriminatory treatment. There was preferential treatment of servers. Management didn’t bat an eye. Hamiltons Kitchen was a terrible place to work, they had no regard for human empathy, and I wouldn’t even spit on a fork in their kitchen if given the opportunity.
