Pros

Staff are friendly and creative to work with. If you like science, ASC can be a fun place to work. Good job to get entry-level experience. ASTC membership is a plus.

Cons

Very low pay. The organization acknowledges that it under pays, but is not willing to increase salaries. Upper leadership only cares about revenue, not the organizational mission or the staff. Poor leadership can be felt throughout the whole organization, and trickles-down from executive leadership to managers to everyone else. You can't look up to managers/leadership to learn or gain mentorship. Staff feel lied to. Poor communication between leadership and staff, and poor communication between departments. Very little training and professional development available. Very little growth opportunity. The organization prefers to hire from the outside instead of hiring from within. High turnover - most staff stay long enough to gain a bit of experience, then leave to go places where they will be valued and paid fairly for their work.

Hi, and thanks for taking the time to give your feedback. I would be glad to talk about your thoughts more specifically, as I am always open to ideas for how we can improve. As the person who's ultimately accountable for this team, it's never easy to read about an unfavorable experience here. I would like to add some information about the compensation and growth opportunity comments. We've historically provided annual cost of living adjustments across the board. And as I mentioned previously, this year we completed a compensation analysis and benchmarking study on all of the positions at ASC; from that study, we've shared with all staff a transparent process for determining base pay and increases so that we are equitable, fair, and tied to market. Also, more than half of the staff will receive market-based pay increases this year, as was announced during an all-staff meeting last fall. I am proud of those efforts. With regard to internal advancement, we've made some great promotions within the organization - at least 9 over the last 18 months (with a full-time staff of about 45, that's 20% of the roles filled via internal promotion), and we always are proud to champion team members who want to grow and take on greater roles within ASC. It's not only great for them to advance their career, but also for ASC to retain strong staff who are committed to our future. Leadership cares deeply about our mission, and our team. As a former school science teacher, what we do here couldn't be more important to me. And as someone who wants to see ASC be as successful as possible, I welcome a conversation with you to dive into your thoughts and ideas about how to accomplish that goal. I would appreciate it. Thanks, -Steve
